Meadow Haul

Okay, okay, so the “Meadow Haul” title is incredibly corny, but it was just too easy, and I couldn’t resist 🙂 I don’t do haul posts very often, but I thought I’d pop this one up, because I can’t believe that I bought so much stuff. I really don’t do it very often!

According to my Goodreads account, I haven’t read (well, I haven’t completed) a book since February, when I read The Time Traveller’s Wife. It hasn’t been for a want of trying, I’ve attempted to read a few things that I’ve picked up in Charity Shops over the past few months, but I either get bored, or they just became so ridiculously “as if” and cliched, that I generally can’t be bothered.
In the end, I found myself in the Young Adult section and picked up two books that I’d heard a lot about (I am Number Four” and “Hunger Games”, and a book that sounded interesting in “Gone”.
I’m currently reading “Gone”, whilst the boyfriend is reading “I am Number Four”.
I am Number Four: £7.99
Hunger Games: £7.99
Gone: £6.99
Offer: 3 for 2

Anyone who has ever stayed in a Travelodge Hotel, knows that they don’t supply shampoo or shower gel, so although I’d taken a few samples that I’d collected from magazines, there wasn’t enough for the two of us, so I decided to pick up a couple of travel products from Superdrug, and since they were 4 for the price of 3, I thought I’d give the Dentyl Active mouthwash a try, since it’s apparently all “innovative”.
Prices: Range from 50p to £1.99
Offer: 4 for 3

I really don’t do face masks enough, but the boyfriend used the self heating Apricot, Peach and Mango one, whilst I chose the yummy smelling Strawberry Exfoliating face mask 🙂

I wish someone would tell me why exactly a pack of four nose strips are so bloomin’ expensive?
These were the cheapest I could find in Superdrug, and they were around the £2.50 mark, although they had an offer on these, hence the purchase of two boxes.

I’m still very new to doing anything with my nails, but I’m really loving these 4 Way Nail Buffers, and my nails seem to be appreciating it 🙂
Whilst I was in Superdrug, I had a quick look through the beauty counters, and there were a couple of things that I wanted to say:
You might remember that the last time I visited Superdrug in Meadowhall, I was appalled by how poorly maintained the Sleek stand was, well, I can say that it looked neater on the surface, but I decided to have a look at the tester palettes, and nearly all of them were empty. I’m going to assume that people had been pushing the colours out and stealing them, but if that’s the case, what is the point of leaving the empty palettes on the stand??
Second, you might also remember that I was trying to find anywhere that sold MUA Quake polishes, and I can confirm that as of my visit, the Meadowhall Superdrug was not selling them!!

I think that I am physically incapable of walking past a Paperchase without buying anything, and yup, I didn’t manage it this time either.
Pen: £1.25
Mini Emery Boards: £1
Lip Balms: £2.50

What can I say about The Big Bang Theory? It’s potentially one of the very few decent comedic imports from America at the minute, and I absolutely love it!
Complete First Season: £8 (HMV)
Oh, and here’s something that I thought you might like …..

Have you had any super duper finds recently?

Sanctuary Polishing Hot Cloth Cleanser

Why I bought this brand: So, I’m getting straight into the review today, and the reason I bought it was quite simple! I had a £5-off voucher from Boots, which included the Sanctuary facial skincare range! Well, that’s only half the reason, to be fair. I’ve actually tried a couple of Sanctuary products over the years, and I have to say that I’m always really impressed.

Yes, Sanctuary is expensive, but sometimes, I think that it’s nice to have some expensive spa-type products, that I use occassionally, meaning that they last longer, and because they were expensive and only used rarely, when I actually do use them, they feel kinda special, and it makes the event a nicer one.

Why I chose this specific product: In all honesty, it was because it was one of the cheapest products in the Sanctuary range, that a. my local Boots stocks, and b. that I haven’t tried in the past.

I was also interested as to how a “hot cloth cleanser” would work, and I was quite intrigued as to what would actually be in the box. So, this is a completely new experience for me.

So, what does come in the box? More than I expected actually, since I wasn’t expected much more than a fancy face cloth. But, inside the box was:

  • A Muslin Cloth – This is different to a normal face cloth, because they are made using a tighter weave, and some experts claim that they they slightly exfoliate your skin, in a gentle way. I don’t know if this is true or not, because I’ve never used muslin, or even really heard of it, other than in passing.
  • 125ml tube of Cleanser

How do you use it? This product is really easy to use:

  1. Soak the muslin cloth in hot water (from the tap is fine), wring it out quickly, and open it out before placing it over your face. This is done to open up your pores, allowing the cleanser to get into them.
  2. Squirt a little of the cleanser onto your hand, and carefully massage the product all over your face and neck. The packaging recommends doing this is circular motions. This works at clearing grease and dirt out of your pores.
  3. Soak the cloth in the probably now warm water, and carefully wipe off the cleanser. The packaging calls this “polishing”, but to me, it’s just a fancy marketing term for wiping it off!!
  4. Run your cloth under the cold tap, and rinse the product off it.
  5. Whilst the cloth is still cool place it flat over your face for roughly 30 seconds. This will close your pores up, ensuring that no dirt can get inside them.
  6. Pat your face dry using a clean towel.
  7. Apply a good facial moisturiser, of your choice.

What did I think of the cleanser? Personally, the cleanser didn’t smell particularly nice at all. It was a very light, but strange smell that I just couldn’t describe at all. It was a much thicker cleanser than the kind I typically use.

What did I think of using the Muslin cloth? I actually really enjoyed the whole process of laying a warm and then cold cloth over my face. There was something quite relaxing about it, especially when I was using the cloth hot.

I’ve read a few people saying that they use muslin cloth for their cleanser, instead of using cotton wool, and I can definitely understand why they do, for a couple of reasons:

  1. I sometimes find that cottom wool has hard bits of cotton in. Of course, we have to remember that cottom is a natural product so it’s inevitable for these bits to get left behind sometimes, but I find that they can be harsh and scratchy.
  2. Let’s face it, throwing away cotton wool after every use isn’t very environmentally friendly. So, the fact that you can machine wash a muslin cloth, and many claim that they last a very long time, the environment likes them much better!

Overall Result: My skin felt really great after the very first use. It felt really clean, and refreshed. Nicely, it left my skin feeling slightly tight, but not as irritatingly tight as some mud packs do, where you have to exercise your face just to stop it feeling so weird. Instead, the tightness is more gentle, and feel more normal, if that makes sense.

Was it worth the money? Was it worth the £5.20 that I paid with my £5-off voucher? Yes, it definitely was. I certainly intend to keep using it, as it was intended (you know how sometimes you buy these fancy sets, but you only end up using part of it, because the whole process is so fiddly?).

Was it worth the original price of £10.20? Honestly, I’m not so sure. On the one hand, I can imagine both the cleanser and the muslin cloth lasting me a long time, but on the other hand, I can imagine that it’s possible to have a similar experience cheaper, by buying a pack of muslin cloths, and a normal cleanser.

But, despite that, I’m glad to have learnt a new way of cleansing, instead of having to buy cotton wool every couple of months!

Yet Another Pretty Tag

Hey guys, here’s another tag challenge for you, which I “acquired” so-to-speak from Dreams that Glitter. I liked this one, because it has a mish-mash of beauty and non-beauty related questions 🙂
Enjoy.

1. What is your favourite fashion magazine?
Oh lord. Please don’t hate me, but I honestly can not stand Fashion magazines. They’re just not me at all. And to be fair, they’re not really aimed at people like me (fat girls that don’t quite fit the idea they like to convey in most these magazines). I alsohave huge issues with how much photoshopping goes on in these magazines, it’s not natural, and it’s not healthy.
2. Who is your favourite singer/band?
Now this is an easy question! Linkin Park of course! Roll on November 10th at the O2 Arena..woohoo!
3. Who is your favourite youtube guru?
This a tough one. I don’t think I can choose just one, but here are my Top Three:
4. What is your favourite makeup product?
At the minute, my Anita Grant, Lippy Pucker. Nowthat the weather has started getting a little chilly, my lips have begun to suffer, and these are the perfect solution.
5. Where would you like to live?
Somewhere rural, in a nice little village, with mountains in the distance, and overlooking a river or lake.
Something like this, perhaps:
6. What is your favourite film?
Oh come on, I’m a Film Geek, I really can’t pick just one! Although, I will say that I have a weird “craving to watch this film, right now:
The character of Caroline, is an absolute legend, especially when she dresses up as a Christmas Tree! Haha, classic! I couldn’t find a clip of that scene, but he’sone that is just as good!
7. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Eek… I have no idea…hmm, let me think:
  • Brown pumps
  • Gold pumps
  • Red and white wedges
  • Brown wedges
  • Grey Boots
  • Winter Walking Boots
  • Summer Walking Boots
  • Roman Sandals
  • Brown trainers
  • Pink trainers
  • Gym trainers
  • “Ball” Shoes
  • Black Pumps
  • Purple Pumps
I think that’s it, which to be fair, isn’t really that bad compared to a lot of girls 🙂
 8. What is your favourite colour?
 Lilac! Woohoo!

The Hottie and the Nottie: September

My gosh, September already! It’s weird thinking about September, because it’s the month when the School Year begins, and even though I graduated five years ago, I still find it strange to not be starting a new Academic Year in September. But, it’s not just education that tends to start for me in September, because September always seems to be a month of new beginnings in my life…not really sure what this month is going to bring me, but I’m excited to find out.

But, anyway, whilst I sit here patiently waiting (in Wales, where I’m on holiday of course!) I’ll have a run down of what I’m loving and loathing this new month!

Loving

Boots. I know it seems way to early to be looking at boots, but it’s definitely started getting chilly, and the shops have started bringing in their Autumn wardrobes, so it’s a good time to mention these.
The great thing about boots, is that it doesn’t matter if you prefer boots with a big heel, a small heel or completely flat, you are guaranteed to find a boot that you love, just like these ones from New Look for £19.99 that I’m loving, and think are an absolute bargain.
It’s easy to spend a fortune on boots when it starts getting chilly, so I’m thrilled to have found these ones.
Another great thing about boots is that you can buy a size larger and wear lovely cosy warm socks to keep your feet toasty warm.

Holidays. Personally, I think that September is a great time of year to go on holiday, because typically the weather is still pretty nice, and with the kids being back at School, it’s quieter and holidays tend to be a little bit cheaper. And absolutely nothing could beat the Welsh countryside and it’s cute Welsh towns and villages. I have had a (literal) lifetime love affair with Snowdonia and I’m so glad to be back.

Ghost HuntersImage via WikipediaGhost Hunters. I’m not fortunate enough to have Digital TV (I just have Freeview), so I’m forced to enjoy this online when it airs in America, but I absolutely love this show. I know a lot of people think that it’s faked, but whether it is or not I still think the show is great, and it never fails to freak me out. I’m so glad that it’s back after a summer break!

Loathing

My Weight. This is something that I don’t really talk about in my blog, mainly because I worry that if I talk  about it I’ll get a load of “how can you write a beauty blog when you’re nothing but a fat cow”, but it’s not really about anyone else, it’s about me. I know I’m fat, and I know it’s my fault, I just wish that I could take control and handle it. I think I just need someone  to kick me up the arse and not give up on pushing me….I really wish I could afford a personal trainer 🙂

The end of Big Brother. Over the past ten years, I’vehad a very love-hate relationship with Big Brother. It’s had it’s brilliant times, and it’s had it’s bad, and even though I think that the show is definitely past it’s best, I am really going to miss it. This really is the end of an era, because for the past ten years, all through my GCSEs, A Levels, Degree etc Big Brother has been the centre of my summer. It sounds sad, but I dunno what I’m gonna do next summer haha…

Geek Chic” Glasses. The irritating thing about this fashion for “geek” glasses, is that you just know that a large amount of the fashionable people that wear them (albeit not all of them), first of all generally don’t even need glasses, and secondly, probably bullied or at least teased kids for wearing similar things, during their school days. It’s funny how something can become cool once a “fashionable” person starts wearing it. In a way it shows how superficial a lot of people are.

Tag Challenge: Day 16: A Song that makes me Cry

Day 16: A Song that makes me Cry

I was going to be really cliche in my song choice, and choose Sinead O’Connor‘s “Nothing Compares 2 U” (don’t you think that song was really ahead of it’s time, with the txt tlk haha…I’ve never noticed that before!!) But, earlier today I was actually reminded of a more powerful song that never, ever fails to create the Queen of Blubberville.

The thing is though, that I cry at anything: films, soaps, songs…EVERYTHING! So, I’m amazed that I managed to get this down to just one song.

Buuut, unfortunately, I am going to be cliche in one thing: Yup, my choice comes from a video game, and yup, it is a Final Fantasy….who would have ever guessed!!

1000 Words by Jade from Sweetbox (Final Fantasy X-2)

Everytime I hear this incredibly powerful song, and it hits the final chorus, I just can’t help but cry. It is just so incredibly sad (in more ways than one!) And the funny thing is that you don’t even have to listen to the English version to truly appreciate the song, although it helps. Koda Kumi’s Japanese version is just as immensely emotive.

I’m a Plus Size….I’m not Eighty

I’ve always been what you’d consider a larger girl, certainly curvier than all my school friends anyway. Admittedly, the size I am right now, is mainly my own fault, but even if I crash dieted I’m never going to be a super slim super model type of girl. And you know what? I am quite happy with that, because being slim, well, that just isn’t what nature intended for me. And losing some weight is a completely different issue, so I’m not even going to mention that again in this particular blog.

To be fair, I’ve never really been what you’d consider a fashion-minded person, as in I’ve never followed trends specifically. I’m more into wearing what I like and what suits me. Unfortunately, as I’ve gotten larger, the shops that I can shop in has gotten more “exclusive”, if that’s the word to use. But, I’ve begun to realise that a lack of shops isn’t really my issue, as more shops are increasing the sizes that they offer, and the wonder of online shopping is just immense. Instead, it is the actual clothes that they provide.

My annoyance brought out this blog, a mini rant, I guess, about how shops are just getting it wrong. Plus size retailers please take note!!

  • First point shops: I am fat, I am not eighty! So many shops seem to think that because I am fat, I want to hide it behind huge cardigans, which is just ridiculous! Do you know how much fatter cardigans make curvy girls look?  This is definitely something that plus-size specialists Evans is guilty of. About 95% of what they sell is just so frumpy, and unflattering that they’d haveyou looking like an even bigger sack of potatoes.
  • Why is it that shops seem to think that everyone who is fat has huge BOOBS. I don’t even want big boobs, but for some reason because I’ fat, I obviously must have them! Well, I don’t! So,  some low-cut tops are just way too baggy around the cleavage, or they’re too low because my boobs just don’t fill them, as I think I’m expected to.
  • I am one of those unlucky sods of whom is unfortunate to have a long torso, and short legs, which means that regular length trousers are just too long for me, so I do better wearing short or petite trousers and jeans. However, most ranges don’t do short-length in plus sizes, and petite ranges very rarely go higher than a size 14 either.
  • Did you know that the majority of shops (on and offline) that offer plus sizes do not sell Maternity clothing for anything above a Size 16? I know it’s not necessarily healthy to be pregnant if you’re carrying excess weight, but that is not the point! As a plus sized girl, it makes me worry that if I should get pregnant anytime soon, I’d have to stay at home because my bump wouldnt fit into anything worthy enough to step out of the door, which is just disgusting. The only store I found selling plus size maternity clothes for above a Size 16, was Next, but unfortunately that is only available online and is incredibly limited.
  • My last gripe with plus size shopping is do shops realise how demeaning it is to be served in a plus-size shop (take note Evans) by a size 8 Sales Assistant? Surely, the Sales Assistants job is to promote the brand, but how can they promote it when they don’t fit into the clothes that they are selling? You don’t see Size 20 women working in Top Shop or Bay Trading, because they wouldn’t squeeze into the clothes, so why should it be any different the other way around? It just makes so sense what-so-ever!

Where should larger girls be shopping?

If you’re a larger girl who still wants to look good at affordable prices, you should check out New Look‘s Inspire range, which has a great range of fashionable outfits that look incredible, and aren’t overpriced tat.

Asos‘ Curve range also has a lot of larger sizes on offer that are the same as many items available in smaller sizes, plus postage is free. However, make sure that you order the right size using their Size Guides.

Dorothy Perkins offers great clothes upto a Size 22, which again are the same ranges as the smaller sizes.

Remember: You might be fat, but that does not mean that you don’t deserve to feel good.

Tag Challenge: Day 13: Fictional Books

    Day 13:  I know what I don’t like…

When I first saw what todays tag was, I thought “oooh, favourite book”, but hmm…didn’t I just do that a few Tags ago?? Now,why would I be boring enough to write about another favourite book? Well, I could quite easily, because I have so many books that I could have picked, but instead, I’ve decided to have a little rant about fiction today.

But, first, I’ll just give advance warning that this is a Rant Blog, and if you’re a fan of Jodi Picoult or Stephenie Meyer (ugh!) you might not want to read this! And yes, yes I am a self-confessed Book Snob!!

I’ve been a huge book lover since I was old enough to read, but one thing that I’ve grown to detest, is how damned picky I’ve become over books. When I was a kid and pretty much through the first half of my teens I could read practically everything about anything, and I basically did just that. Hit A Levels and Uni, and things have really turned around. I think the problem is that I know what I like, and I know what I don’t like. And, I do not like flowery, cliche writing.

The problem with a lot of more “popular” writing today, is that it just comes across as first draft-type material. The first draft is (obviously) what a writer should write without reading it back, ensuring that they finish it, not worrying too much about spelling, language, grammar, punctuation etc. Then they’d re-read it, realise how poor the writing is, so they go back through it and edit it meticulously, avoiding cliche and spelling errors.

    So, in my mind:

First Draft: All about the story
Second Draft: Checking spelling, grammar and punctuation
Subsequent Drafts: Editing and omitting irrelevant chapters and dialogue

The last one, is the one that I think a lot of fiction writers (and their Editors) forget (or can’t be bothered) to do a lot of the time. They seem too obsessed at releasing this instant bestseller that ticks every box (step forward authors that churn out novel after novel of over-emotive,  highly controversial topics, that are easy money), that they don’t appear to take the time to realise that a lot of what is written just does nothing to the actual story. It doesn’t move it forward, and a lot of the time gives us, the readers, information that we just do not need, or want, to know.

Why does Jodi Picoult get on my goat?

Basically, for the same reason authors like John Grisham do. They write about ten books in a year (seriously, ten books??), all focusing on a topic that is guaranteed to hit a point with someone whether it’s controversial or will just hit a woman’s emotional side, which is fine, as long as the novel challenges something in a different way.

To me, writing like this is too easy, and it patronises us as the reader. We are better than this, and I’m sorry, but for me, Jodi Picoult’s books read like Made-For-TV middle of the afternoon Channel Five films. Things that occur are so unbelievably unrealistic and drippy.

With Picoult, I feel nothing for the cliched characters, and I really couldn’t care less about the apparently difficult choices they need to make.

Plus the topic choices that appear to just be far too easy, really bug me!

And, why does Stephenie Meyer annoy me?

Stephenie Meyer is an odd one. She has some really good ideas on a whole, but actually pieced together, she seems to lose something. She seems very good at building up tension, which admittedly a lot of writers actually can not do, but then when you think you’re about the reach the big climax, it’s all over and done with, because it all happened whilst Bella was stuck inside a tent. She leaves you feeling like you’ve spent all day climbing up a mountain, but just as you get to the top, where you’re expecting to see a beautiful aerial view of the world below, Meyer pushes you off the side of the mountain, and you feel like you just wasted an entire day (and several hundred pages) for an absolute anti-climax!

Okay, so my ranting is over for the day! Oh, it is good to get it over with so early in the day!

    Sunday Tips: Instant Va-Va-Voom

As someone with really fine hair, that very rarely has any volume, I know how frustrating it is to get that little bit of extra volume. Sure, having layers is a good idea, or even using the right, light-weight shampoo, but when those things aren’t an option, what can you do?

Here are a few tips, that will give your limp locks a real boost of va-va-voom, without the need for anything other than things that you’ll more than likely already have in our Beauty Cabinet!!

    •  Blow dry your hair upside down, making sure to really ruffle up your hair as your drying, aiming the air mainly at the roots.
    • Straighten your hair upside down. This sounds bizarre, but this genuinely works. You might have to straighten the underneath sections afterwards but thie can get you excellent volume.
    • Again upside down, cover your hair in hairspray and throw your head back. Your hair will look awful and messy, but don’t worry. Let the hairspray dry, before combing it out preferably with your fingers, then apply a lighter coating of spray to help your volume say fuller.
    • If this still isn’t enough volume, you could also try back-coming/teasing your hair, however, this can be incredibly damaging, especially on thin hair that is already potentially very weak.

Good luck at getting that va-va-voomed hair that you so desperately want!

    Eyeko Graffiti Pen Reviews

Something that you might not know about me: I can not put eyeliner on to save my life!! Pencil eyeliners I can handle on the bottom eyelid and waterline, but on the top lid? Say hello to my little panda-eyed friend!! And Liquid liners, I can just about manage, as long as I angle the brush just the exact right way, and…oh, no it looks like I have allowed a (very) small child to scribble in my eyelid!

It’s actually amazing that I get that far, because not that long ago, I couldn’t put any kind of liner on at all, so most of the time I just didn’t bother.

So when I visited the Eyeko website recently (for something completely different!!), and stumbled across their Graffiti pens, I decided that it was worth a try!

What they say: The precision brush nib is super easy to control to draw on thick or thin lines…Eyeko Graffiti Eyeliner Pen is smudge-proof, fade-proof and long lasting!

Expectations: I imagined that since it looked like a pen, it would be as easy as using a pen! Simple, really!

Packaging: As a lover of stationery, I love the packaging, and how it looks like a normal felt tip pen. The actual nib is quite a bit longer than a typical felt tip, but that’s about the only really difference. The pen-like packaging also makes it easier to store in my pot with my make up brushes, which I quite like.

How did it perform? I have to admit that I was sceptical about this being easier to apply, but to be truthful, it was, andthe best part is that it is really easy to control whether you get a fine or a thick line. That is something that I have huge issues about with other liquid eyeliners. Doing flicks and wings was much easier too, although it didn’t help me master getting both eyes‘ wings to look the same…I don’t think I’ll ever get that right!

I do, however, have a couple of quibbles. Throughout using the Graffiti Pen, I kept finding myself looking for the pot to dip the wand in like a typical liquid eyeliner (this of course is nothing more than habit!), but it raised the issue of how do you know when it’s running out? With potted liners, you know you’re running out when you’re not getting much product on the wand, but you obviously can’t do this with a pen. I also wonder if they’ll dry up the same way that felt tip pens do.

My main quibble, was actually the idea that the the liner is “fade-proof and long-lasting”, because it did fade, but then again, the colour wasn’t that bold in the first place! I like black liners to be really, really black and for some reason this one just wasn’t.

Overall: I liked the precision, but hated the faded colour.
